It is no secret that South Korea’s Samsung Electronics has a runaway winner on its hands with the Samsung Galaxy S3. This phone, the third in the S series is a marked improvement over its popular predecessors. By all accounts it is the fastest fastest-selling android smartphone of all time. In fact, it has so many fantastic features that it has sold far more units than Apple’s undeniable desirable iPhone 4. It has also left HTC’s One X and One XL far behind. It is no surprise that Samsung is the world’s biggest technology firm from the point of reference of revenues – and don’t forget the accessories like Galaxy S3 covers and cases!.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 was launched in different markets of the world starting end May this year. It has done amazingly well in Australia where it retails for around $899 for the 16GB version. It will also be available in a 32GB model. Weighing a mere 133g, its screen is considerably larger than that of the S2 at an impressive 12.2 cm. The phone is available in “marble white” and “pebble blue”.
This smartphone features Android’s latest Ice Cream Sandwich operating system. It has been equipped with a variety of cutting edge technologies that enable it to perform a variety of tasks. A user can watch videos in a small window (which can be positioned anywhere) whilst using the email feature. The phone also has excellent voice activated controls. Users also love its Wi-Fi direct feature through which a file as large as 1 GB can be transferred to another S3 merely by making them touch each other.
It has an 8-megapixel camera in addition to a 1.9 MP front-facing camera. Not only can the front camera be used for HD recording but it also can keep track of the eye movement of the user. This enables the screen to stay alive as long as the user is looking at it.
Samsung has shipped out more than 10 million of these sleek and power-packed smartphones in markets all over the world within less than 2 months of its launch. Of these, about a million are being sold in Australia alone. It will be interesting to see whether Apple is able to better this record with its iPhone 5 which is to be launched shortly.
According to JK Shin, in charge of the company’s mobile communications division, the impressive sales of this phone will help the company post second-quarter profit bigger than the previous quarter. This is no mean feat considering the turmoil that the European economy is currently going through. Interestingly, Samsung’s first-quarter results were also extremely high thanks to its hugely popular smartphones. The company has already posted a net profit of $A4.43 billion for this period.
